On Saturday, the Australian swimming team, the Dolphins, added to their already impressive medal count at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by winning gold, silver, and two bronze medals. In the women’s 200-meter backstroke, Kaylee McKeown earned her second gold medal of the Olympics, and Ariarne Titmus, who already had two golds, added a silver to her collection by finishing second.

Emily Seebohm, an Olympic veteran from Australia, placed third in the backstroke, behind McKeown and silver medalist Kylie Masse of Canada. For good measure, Australia’s relay squad also brought home bronze in the mixed medley relay, making Olympic history as the first time men and women swam together in a relay event.

McKeown, a twenty-year-old, won gold in the 100-meter backstroke earlier in the week. After coming in second to Masse for the majority of the 200 metres, McKeown sprinted past her competitor on the final lap and crossed the finish line in a time that was close to the Olympic record.

Katie Ledecky beat her competitor Titmus in the women’s 800 metre race. The American started out ahead and finished by over a second clear of Titmus despite a late effort from the Australian. With Ledecky’s victory, the two of them have now won two gold medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics between them.

After the meet, Titmus commented, “I’m incredibly delighted that I could perform when it mattered.” She ended up with two gold medals, one silver medal, and a bronze medal in the relay. “While I’m glad the Tokyo campaign is gone, I’m relieved that it’s finally over. However, I’m very pleased with my performance this week.

Titmus proclaimed her excitement at finishing third in an event that Ledecky had dominated for the past decade.

She remarked, “I’d love to have a good break.” For now, I’ll consult with her coach, Dean Boxall, about our next steps. My shoulder, in particular, needs a break and some time to rest and recuperate. I hate to admit it, but I need some time away from the pool to consider what I’ve accomplished here and how to best build on it for next season.

Last Words

On Saturday, Australia’s relay dominance at Tokyo 2020 continued when the Dolphins won their fifth relay medal with two relays yet to go. McKeown, Zac Stubblety-Cook, Matthew Temple, and Emma McKeon gave Australia a sufficient margin of victory over a late-charging United States squad; McKeon even managed to outsprint the American sprinting phenom Caeleb Dressel.

In this race, teams had to utilise four swimmers total, two men and two women, but they may use any combination they liked.  Thanks for reading our article K McKeown Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
