Foroughi scored a record 244.8 points to earn first place in the men’s 10m air pistol category, making history for Iran by bringing home the country’s first-ever shooting medal. The Serbian and Chinese competitors in the shooting sport finished second and third, respectively.
Foroughi broke the record for the oldest Olympian ever when he won a bronze medal at the age of 40.

Ebrahim Raisi, the incoming president of Iran, called to offer his congratulations to Foroughi. Similarly elated was Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who remarked that Foroughi’s “winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in shooting, for the first time in the history of Iran’s attendance, was a source of pride and joy.”
Foroughi, a nurse with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, is 41 years old (IRGC). According to reports, he has been serving as part of the IRGC’s medical deployment in Syria.
The IRGC’s Basij paramilitary forces leader, Brigadier General Gholamreza Soleimani, has also spoken highly of Foroughi. He went on to praise the Basij, noting that their “loyal, ardent, hard-working youth” were responsible for Iran’s victory and inspiring “pride, honour, and dignity” in all Iranians.
