She won the bronze medal in the women’s 5000-meter run at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. In 2019, she took home bronze in the 1500-meter run at the World Athletics Championships, and in 2022, she earned silver in the 1500-meter run and gold in the 5000-meter run.
Tsegay has won two medals at the 1500 metre event at the World Indoor Championships, a bronze in 2016 and a gold in 2022. She previously held the world records for the under-18 (current) and under-20 categories in the indoor 1500-meter race, which she currently dominates.
When she was 17, she won the silver medal in the 1500-meter event at the World Junior Championships. At the 2014 World Indoor Championships, she ran the distance for her country. Tsegay is an adaptable sprinter.
She was ranked #10 in the world for the indoor 800 metres in February 2022, and #6 for the indoor 10,000 metres.

In the indoor 1500-meter race, 17-year-old Gudaf Tsegay from Ethiopia established a new world record of 4 minutes, 8.47 seconds in Stockholm, Sweden, in February 2014. After finishing second to fellow Ethiopian Dawit Seyaum (4:09.86) at the World Junior Championships in Eugene in July, her performance of 4:10.83 earned her silver.
In Glasgow two years later, Tsegay ran a run of 4 minutes, 1.81 seconds in this indoor event, breaking the world under-20 record set by her compatriot Kalkidan Gezahegne in 2010. In 2020, another Ethiopian, Lemlem Hailu, beat Tsegay’s record.
She ran 4:05.71 to take third place at the World Indoor Championships, behind Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands (4:04.96) and Dawit Merga of Ethiopia (4:05.72). (4:05.30). At the 2016 Rio Olympics, the then-19-year-old athlete competed for Ethiopia in the 800 metres, however she was eliminated in the third heat after clocking 2:00.13.
She ran the 1500-meter race at the 2017 World Championships in London, however she didn’t get past the semi-finals. After struggling with the first lap, she eventually gave up and finished with the slowest time, approximately 13 seconds behind the fastest time from the heats.
Last Words
Tsegay ran a career best of 3:54.38 to take bronze at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. Hassan won in 3:51.95, and Faith Kipyegon of Kenya came in at 3:54.22 for second.
