C. Giorgi Olympic Games Tokyo 2020
Svitolina has had problems all season with her court covering, and she was eliminated from the French Open and Wimbledon in the first rounds, respectively. Svitolina, who recently married Gael Monfils, has shown remarkable fortitude this week, though.
She defeated Ajla Tomljanovic and Maria Sakkari in three sets, after losing the first set in each of those matches.
However, despite being the fourth seed, she was not an overwhelming favourite in her match against Giorgi. Nonetheless, the Ukrainian was clear about her goals from the very beginning. She got a break of service early on due to her strong serving.
Giorgi’s Remarkable Comeback
Her response was strong, and she quickly built a 5-1 advantage. However, despite Giorgi’s remarkable comeback and victory in the next three games, Svitolina took the first set by a score of 6-4.
For Svitolina, the second set was a little less challenging than the first. She served confidently once more, preventing a game-changing break for Giorgi. However, she broke serve and went on to win the second set easily (6-4), advancing to the semifinals.
Depending on who advances, she’ll either Paula Badosa or Marketa Vondrousova in the quarterfinals.
