Swimming representatives for Panama in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics are Emily Santos and Tyler Christianson. While Chistrianson will compete in the men’s 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, Santos will compete in the women’s 100 breaststroke.

As a result of her time of 1:11.43 in the 100 breast at the 2021 UANA Tokyo Qualifier in Clermont, Florida, Santos, who swims for the Montverde Academy in Monteverde, Florida, was nominated to the squad.

Santos is a recent high school graduate who swam for Monteverde at the 2021 Florida Senior Championships, where she and her team won silver medals in the 50-yard and 100-yard breaststrokes, respectively, with times of 30.16 and 1:04.60.

During the month of May of 2021, Santos competed at the Puerto Rico International Swim, where she won the long course 50 breaststroke in 32.94 seconds, placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.33, and came in seventh in the 200 breast with a time of 2:42.60.

With the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, Santos competed for Panama and finished 12th in the 100 breaststroke heats, clocking in at a time of 1:12.39. She continued to compete in the B final, where she ran a 1:14.45 and placed 14th. Santos swam a 100 breast in 1:13.36 to place 40th at the 2019 World Junior Swimming Championships in Budapest.

In addition to being an Olympic debutante this year, Christianson also holds the national record in the 200-meter individual medley and the 200-meter breaststroke.

His times of 2 minutes, 3.16 seconds in the individual medley and 2 minutes, 15.79 seconds in the breaststroke were both world records until this year when they were broken by others in the US Open. He raced the 200 IM in 2:05.63 and the 200 breast in 2:16.96 at the 2021 CCCAN Swimming Championships in June 2021.

Christianson is a recent college freshman at Notre Dame. Christianson scored a lot of points for Notre Dame at the 2021 ACC Championships, and he also qualified to race at the 2021 NCAA Championships, therefore he was voted freshman of the year.
